John Baldessari (b.1931) is recognised as a pioneer of conceptual art. Having had a great deal of influence on other artists in his time, he is famous for flouting the rules of art through his use of humour and irony. Baldessari has made his base in Los Angeles since the 1960s. It was in this period that he created his first conceptual artworks; only to cause a sensation by announcing via a newspaper article that he intended to “cremate” his early creations: those dating from 1953 – 1966.

His new media of choice became photography in which he created photo-compositions from material, including stills from film he uncovered, that had been discarded by others in refuse. For over thirty years, Baldessari  has been a significant influential figure for the following generation of artists. Both his artwork and his teaching have been greatly impacted upon by his love of both written and visual language.
