“Light in Watercolour” an exhibition of paintings by Dusan Djukaric, Belgrade
Historically, watercolours have received honours from all corners of the globe. The Chinese considered it as the most valuable and most difficult technique and treated both it and those who had mastered it with a deep respect. The paper used by the Chinese for watercolours is called CHEN XIN DENG, which translates to ‘entrance for clearing the mind’. And, indeed, it is really a kind of cleaning of the mind and the soul.
Geographical landscapes often mimic and help to form the landscape of the soul and this is confirmed by the refined watercolours of Dusan Djukaric. His landscapes invoke a deep and sincere empathy. He is devoted to beauty and ceremonial illumination, and manages to maintain the power of pure sight in a demonic world. There is nothing impulsive or dramatic in his work, only a reserved lyricism and the expression of a calm, intimate temperament. The landscape in Djukaric’s paintings is seemingly dematerialised by gentle blues and fluid colours. He demonstrated the ability to ennoble this conventional subject with the spirit of lyrical refinement and finesse. The fluidity of atmosphere and the shimmering mobility of water are expressed in Djukaric’s watercolours.
Djukaric took inspiration from the impressionists in his expression of the importance of light and reflection in his work. Through the silvery-blue and pearly tones, mixed in with autumn ochres, the artist speaks of the refined vision of an enlightened world and the pleasure of life. Djukaric manages to transfer emotion and meditative warmth onto a landscape, intriguing the observer and instilling them with a sensitive spiritual and soul structure. Thereby the close intimacy of Djukaric’s work is shared with its audience.
